Empowering Sensory Loss Communities
Advocacy, information, and advisory services now place a strong focus on legal matters, mediation, guidance for healthy relationships, accessibility, and awareness consultations. We also collaborate with various services and organisations to address issues related to employment, poverty (financial stability), wellbeing, and mentoring, thus forming a robust support network for our community.
Our mission is to inform, foster connections, elevate lives, and guarantee inclusive support for every individual experiencing sensory loss.
Welcome to the Sensory Support UK website
Our aim is to create an engaging, informative, and inspiring message that encapsulates the essence of our longstanding Advocacy, Information, and Advice service, commissioned across the North East since 2004, while also introducing our innovative new projects focused on legal support, mediation, fostering healthy relationships, and ensuring accessibility and reasonable adjustments for all. We believe that every voice matters, and through cohesive, community focused service delivery, we can empower individuals and build a more inclusive society.
Our Legacy Service: Advocacy, Information and Advice
For years, our Advocacy, Information, and Advice service has served as the cornerstone of support for individuals across the North East. Our team is committed to ensuring that each individual receives tailored guidance and robust support:
Empowerment and Guidance: What are our rights? We provide concrete advice and serve as strong advocates to help navigate services, policies, and the complex landscape of local support.
Community Impact: By engaging with a variety of stakeholders, from local authorities to nonprofit organisations, our service has built trust and driven positive change.
Quality and Accessibility: As a Disability Confident employer, we focus on delivering accessible services that are high quality service standards and responsive to the diverse needs of our community.
New Project Proposals
In parallel with our established service, we are excited to announce our newest initiatives, designed to address emerging community needs:
Mediation
Creating Bridges: Our mediation service aims to resolve conflicts constructively, empowering individuals and groups to find common ground and reach amicable solutions.
Skill Development: By offering ‘What is Mediation’ workshops and training sessions, we aim to equip professionals with the skills needed to engage with legally qualified advocates and mediators. We will explain why mediation and alternative conflict resolution skills are value-driven to enhance personal and professional relationships and are more cost-effective than litigating disputes.
Community Cohesion: Targeted sessions will allow us to strengthen connections within the community, promote coproduction engagements, and develop a long-term understanding of the barriers faced by individuals with sensory loss on a daily basis.
Healthy relationships
Having worked with Northumbria Police and undertaken training for the Kindling Train the Trainer Bystander Campaign, as well as implementing the ethics of Victim Focus, our team has participated in extensive workshops addressing misogyny, negative influences on social media, and the actions that can be taken when you see unhealthy behaviour in both personal environments and wider social settings.
Recent reports indicate that child victims of domestic abuse are left unsupported due to rising demand and a lack of funding. With the necessary resources, we will directly focus on meeting their needs under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, in line with the government’s commitment to tackling Violence Against Women and Girls within the next decade and helping them recognise the red flags and understand what constitutes abuse.
Supportive Environments: We are developing programmes that encourage the formation and nurturing of healthy relationships in families, workplaces, and social settings. We offer advice and information on, ‘spotting the red flags’ and ‘what to do next’ when relationships break down.
Workshops and Consultations: Our tailored sessions will provide practical advice on establishing boundaries, enhancing communication, and fostering respectful interactions. These workshops can be tailored to your individual requirements.
Prevention and Empowerment: By focusing on relationship dynamics early on, we aim to prevent harmful patterns from taking root, fostering healthier, more resilient relationships.
Accessibility and reasonable adjustments consultations
Inclusive Design: Our consultations focus on identifying and addressing the needs of individuals with sensory loss, ensuring that every environment is welcoming and accessible.
Tailored Recommendations: We will work closely with community members and stakeholders to craft bespoke solutions that meet the highest standards of accessibility and compliance. These will include initiatives such as:
- What reasonable adjustments can I implement for my employee that comply with legislation and the conditions outlined in the Equality Act 2010?
- How can I create a more accessible work environment to ensure that individuals are not substantially disadvantaged in their roles compared to others?
- What can I do to enhance accessibility on social media and online?
- What is Access to Work, and how can we apply for this support?
Driving Systemic Change: In addition to individual and professional consultations, this project will act as a catalyst for broader policy adjustments, ensuring that the principles of fairness and inclusivity are integrated into all community services.
Wellbeing
What Is Wellbeing?
Wellbeing isn’t simply the absence of illness, it’s the harmonious balance of mental, emotional, and physical health. True wellbeing means equipping yourself to navigate life’s everyday challenges as well as the unexpected hardships. It’s about cultivating resilience, managing stress, and embracing a holistic vision of health that goes beyond the traditional focus on physical fitness alone. When life brings loss, grief, or sensory challenges, our approach to wellbeing helps you reconnect with a deeper state of balance that acknowledges every part of your experience.
Heart Broken to Healed: Transforming Grief for Individuals with Sensory Loss. The groundbreaking project, ‘Heart Broken to Healed’, was developed in close collaboration with expert counsellors, NHS Mental Health representatives, and other dedicated leaders of like-minded services. This initiative explicitly addresses the complex grief experienced by individuals facing sensory loss. Recognising that mainstream approaches to grief may feel inaccessible or unsympathetic to the unique challenges our community faces, this project offers practical, tailored tactics, from one-to-one support sessions to group recovery workshops, that honour the nuances of grief in a sensory context. By creating spaces of empathy, shared understanding, and innovative support, ‘Heart Broken to Healed’ empowers participants to move from isolation in their pain towards authentic healing and connection.
Embracing Neurosomatic Therapy: A Modern and Inclusive Approach. While many traditional mental health strategies rely heavily on physical exercise as a pathway to improved mental well-being, this approach can feel out of reach for many with disabilities. Neurosomatic Therapy offers a more holistic alternative. Rather than focusing solely on physical activity, this therapy explores the intricate relationship between the nervous system and the body. It works on a cellular level to gently release emotional tension, recalibrate stress responses, and improve emotional regulation. By tuning into the subtle cues your body sends, Neurosomatic Therapy enables deep healing that is accessible and tailored to individual needs, making it especially beneficial for those who might not be well served by one size fits all physical activity recommendations.
Empowering Your Journey to Wellbeing: At our core, we believe that everyone deserves a comprehensive, accessible path to healing. By integrating initiatives like ‘Heart Broken to Healed’ with transformative, inclusive therapies such as Neurosomatic Therapy, we aim to redefine wellbeing as a rich, layered experience that honours individuality. Whether you’re coping with grief, adjusting to sensory challenges, or simply seeking new ways to manage life’s pressures, such as anxiety, panic attacks, or low mood, our approach is designed to empower you to live a balanced and resilient life.
We invite you to explore our services and learn more about these innovative methods. Discover a space where healing begins with understanding and every step forward is a testament to your strength. Neurosomatic Therapy can offer fresh paths to healing.
Mentoring
Mentoring: Guiding Individuals with Sensory Loss through Everyday Challenges. For many individuals with sensory loss, daily tasks, from communicating in a noisy environment to navigating social interactions, can become unexpectedly complex. Our mentoring programme is designed to be more than just an additional service; it’s a personalised, empathetic journey that helps individuals overcome everyday hurdles and thrive in their own right. By pairing each client with a mentor who not only understands the personal challenges of sensory loss but has often experienced them firsthand, we foster a unique, trust-based relationship that builds confidence and practical resilience.
A Person-Centred, Empowering Relationship: Mentoring here isn’t about a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, each session is crafted around the individual’s real-life needs. Whether it’s developing communication strategies for a world not always designed with sensory loss in mind, exploring adaptive technologies, or navigating emotional shifts, mentors offer guidance that transforms challenges into opportunities. This personalised approach mirrors our broader ethos, much like our ‘Heart Broken to Healed’ project and the transformative principles behind Neurosomatic Therapy, by recognising that true well-being involves addressing every aspect of life.
Tackling Daily Obstacles with Practical Strategies: Everyday issues for individuals with sensory loss may seem small or insurmountable depending on the moment. Mentors work with clients to identify specific challenges, whether managing sensory overload in public spaces, conveying needs effectively within work or family settings, or simply feeling more secure in unfamiliar environments and then co-create practical, tailored strategies. These sessions empower individuals to develop self-advocacy skills and a proactive mindset, turning daily setbacks into stepping stones for personal growth.
Bridging Holistic Wellbeing and Day-to-day Living: Wellbeing is not only about overcoming significant life changes; it is also about how we manage the everyday moments. By integrating mentoring within our wider framework of support, we create a comprehensive network that touches every layer of an individual’s experience. This holistic approach ensures that each mentoring relationship isn’t just a means to manage crises but a pathway to sustained self-worth, resilience, and autonomy.
Moving Forward Together: At its heart, our mentoring initiative is about connection, providing a consistent and understanding presence that helps individuals with sensory loss navigate life’s twists and turns. As you build a relationship with a mentor, you’re not just receiving advice; you’re engaging in a collaborative process that recognises your unique strengths and challenges. By tackling everyday issues together, mentoring becomes a cornerstone of our commitment to ensuring that every individual feels seen, heard, and empowered in a society that is gradually becoming more inclusive.
Embrace the journey with us, where mentoring transforms the seemingly ordinary into a pathway for meaningful growth and everyday empowerment.
